"It's called the Silverdale, they all had names. It was bought from Sears and Roebuck, and it was delivered on trains, all the parts and all the pieces from the nails to the doorknobs to the roof to the everything. And my grandfather built it."

In the back of our house on Hockanum road there was an addition put on, that was a meat market, and my grandmother was a butcher. She ran the meat market, and the kids delivered the meat during the war years."

"When the dike was built. My grandmother owned all the land that went from the house into the Meadows. And they took it by eminent domain, because in those days, you could just do that. And she didn't have any recourse, you know, she didn't have any money. She was working really hard. They gave her $900, It was like 25 acres of land that they took. And then they built the dike.
